<strong>Train to see everything</strong><br />
In order to see everything you must first focus. Focus on what keywords are driving traffic to your site and what changes they are displaying. <a href="http://dailyseotip.com/10-hacks-to-mine-your-google-analytics-data-deeper/937/" target="_blank">Observe</a> the <a href="http://www.google.com/trends" target="_blank">trends</a> in search for how these keywords evolve over time. This will show you your strengths and also where your competition is vulnerable.<br />

Make sure you are actively chasing at least one of your competitors keywords all the time. You will never gain positions by only defending your own keywords.<br />
<strong>Attack your opponents balance</strong><br />

<p><strong>rel=&#8217;canoncial&#8217; isn&#8217;t doing what we were told it did</strong><br />
Either that or <a href="http://mattcutts.com/blog/" target="_blank">Matt</a> didn&#8217;t get it right. Matt started out by saying it was a confusing question &#8211; I did not find it confusing in the slightest, but that is just me. We have the following scenario:</p>
<ul>
<li>Page A is the original page we want to rank in the SERPs</li>
<li>Page B is a very close replica of A and we are worried about duplicate content and we add the rel=&#8217;canonical&#8217; tag. However links may be slightly different on this page &#8211; for purely &#8221;white-hat&#8221; reasons, of course!</li>
</ul>
<p>The question posed is what happens to the links on page B. Up until today I assumed (and have not read anything, anywhere; nor have I seen any results in my own or others tests that point to the contrary) that a rel=&#8217;canonical&#8217;ed page would flow all PageRank from canonical pages to page A and consolidate there. In other words links pointing TO page B would pass PageRank to page A.<br />
<strong>Follow so far, but what&#8217;s new?</strong><br />
Well, what Matt said in the video, and again I&#8217;m assuming that he knows what he&#8217;s talking about, is that links FROM page B will pass page B&#8217;s rank onward.<br />
<strong>Wait, what?</strong><br />
This means, barring Matt Cutts not being correctly informed, at least one of the two following possibilities:</p>
<ul>
<li>Page A receives page B PageRank for ranking (SERP) purposes, <strong>BUT</strong> is not able to pass that full value of PageRank to the pages linked to from there.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>OR</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Page A revives page B Page rank for all purposes <strong>AND</strong> page B is still able to pass the first amount of PageRank on through its links.</li>
</ul>
<p>None of these scenarios seem reasonable to me, since both have awesome potential for abuse and link schemes. I would love for <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mattcutts" target="_blank">@MattCutts</a> to clear this little mess up.</p>

I now work for <a href="http://bigpoint.com/" target="_blank"">Bigpoint</a>, one of the more exciting game development companies with a focus on browser games. We be going places.</p>

<p><strong>Wrong.</strong></p>
<p>The theme was generally along the lines of Google is Evil. The speaker started out by speaking against Google with &#8221;they steals my datas&#8230; zOMG&#8221;! Step two was a general Cookie-onslaught. This was all in line with the German anti-openness laws and general views of the German public.</p>
<p>10 minutes in we still hadn&#8217;t gotten to the Piwik &#8230; but Google-bashing is alive and well at the Barcamp.</p>
<p>15 minutes in we were still on the &#8221;Google has a profile on you and knows everything you do&#8221;-speech. Get to the point already&#8230;</p>

<p>20 minutes in we were still on the Evil Google bandwagon. The first thing presented not a below-the-belt tackle on GA was a screen shot of a website with a &#8221;Do you as a user wish to be tracked by this website? &#8211; Y/N&#8221;.</p>
<p>This was a clear cut case of false advertising. Or maybe it was just my brain low on coffee, and everyone else in the room knew what they were getting into. A quick look around told me, um, no.</p>
<p>Back to the session and at 25 minutes we finally got to the screenshots. Very long story short. Piwik does not even come close to GA, but good luck with that. I&#8217;m not against using Piwik &#8211; on the contrary, it will probably be a great tool some day. For me it won&#8217;t cut it though.</p>
<p>So, what was the whole point? The presentation was based on the argument that you can&#8217;t use Google Analytics in accordance with German data-protection laws. Enter <a href="http://www.atomiclabs.com/" target="_blank">PION Analytics</a> and guess what? Yup &#8211; you&#8217;re argument is invalid. Sorry.</p>

</p><p>I never thought I would see the day. A newspaper <a href="http://www.dn.se/kultur-noje/nyheter/fallande-dom-i-unikt-upphovsrattsfall-1.1205941" target="_blank">reported</a> (link in Swedish) on the outcome of a trial yesterday. The paper is a little <a href="http://andreas.wedberg.se/b/sanningen-om-lank-malethockeylankaren/" target="_blank">off the mark</a> (link in Swedish), but I&#8217;ll sum up the details.</p>
<p><strong>What the Hockey-Linker Did</strong><br />
The Hockey-Linker, as he is known in Sweden, shared a link on his website.<br />
The link pointed to a pirated stream for ice-hockey games.<br />
Canal+, the broadcaster who was pirated, decided to drag the guy into court.<br />
He was now found guilty on 18 counts of copyright infringement!</p>
<p><strong>Incompetence is Key</strong><br />
The court in Hudiksvall is <a href="http://blogg.vk.se/parment/2010/11/10/inkompetent-tingsrattsdom-i-hudiksvall-197132" target="_blank">incompetent</a> (link in Swedish). How can you charge someone with copyright infringement for simply linking to the material? No, not even linking to the material, but linking to a site providing the material. Would you say Google, Bing or Yahoo were doing the same for linking to ANY website hosting materials used without the copyright holder&#8217;s consent? No, you wouldn&#8217;t, but the Swedish courts seem to think that was a great idea.</p>
<p><strong>My Issues With The Ruling</strong><br />
Since when can a link to a website be seen as copyright infringement? When I link to a website, it&#8217;s like drawing a map for you to follow. Let&#8217;s say I draw you a map. The map leads you to a store that sells pirated media. Now imagine that the copyright holder drags me to court for piracy, because I drew a map. That wouldn&#8217;t hold up, but because it&#8217;s on the Internet it somehow does.</p>

Självfallet trodde han att han hade köpt en svensk produkt genom en svensk hemsida. Lång historia kort så har den hemsidan gått i konkurs och <a href="http://www.samsung.com/se/index.html" target="_blank">Samsung Sverige</a> vill inte ha med fallet att göra.</p>
<p><strong>Sjukt klantigt av Samsung</strong><br />
Argumentet är att Samsung har rätten på sin sida. Grattis Samsung! Jag skrev nyligen om hur man bör <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/svenska/onlinemarknadsforing/klockren-damage-control-av-city-network/">hantera kritik av sitt varumärke på nätet</a>. Det som kanske hade varit bra att nämna i det inlägget &#8211; som jag tyckte var uppenbart &#8211; är att man ska utgå ifrån att varje kund är en ambassadör för varumärket.</p>
<p><strong>Vad det kostar Samsung att laga en produkt</strong><br />
Samsung menar att kostnaden för att laga produkten är SEK 2&nbsp;100,00. Kostnaden är egentligen långt mycket mindre eftersom det är priset som kunden skulle ha betalat.</p>
<p><strong>Vad kostnaden för att INTE laga produkten egentligen är</strong><br />
Förutom artikeln i GP som alla läsare nu glatt uppmärksamt och det här blogginlägget så kommer det säkert skrivas mer om incidenten. Varje person som nu läser om det inträffade kommer att tänka två gånger innan man köper något från Samsung. Jag nämnde att varje nöjd kund är som en ambassadör. Tänk vad glad den där killen hade blivit om Samsung hade sagt:<br />
- Egentligen är detta ärendet något som vi inte ansvarar för, men självklart så hjälper vi dig nu när återförsäljaren inte längre finns kvar.<br />
Visst, man kanske inte hade fått det publicerat i tidningen, men man hade sluppit all den negativa kritik som publiceras nu&#8230;</p>
<p>Kritik på nätet är en rolig sak. Den finns kvar i princip för all framtid.</p>

</p><p>It really is amazing how many stupid people there are out there. No really. Just trying to think of <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/blog/idiots-on-e-bay-it-never-fails/" target="_blank">examples of idiocy</a> for this post I was overwhelmed by my own brainstorming. One of modern societies main failings is that we can&#8217;t seem to keep anything simple anymore.</p>
<p><strong>Learn to KISS</strong><br />
If I could give you just one piece of advice for the future, simplicity would be it. Anyone can <a href="http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Tis-a-Gift-to-be-Simple.aspx" target="_blank">over-complicate a process</a>. It doesn&#8217;t even take talent. Taking something complicated and turning it into 5 lazy steps, that&#8217;s genius!</p>
<p><strong>Step 1: Break It Down</strong><br />
The key to simplicity is breaking down complicated processes, decisions and funnels and identifying the core elements. Let&#8217;s say we&#8217;re doing <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/linkbuilding/" target="_blank">linkbuilding</a>. Getting links to a website may be one of the most complicated and time-consuming efforts you will ever undertake online. Yet, any SEO with half a brain could break it down into 5 steps.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2: Lay It Out</strong><br />
When you want something to be simple, you also need it to be easy. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology" target="_blank">Chronology</a> is a good rule of thumb. Some processes can&#8217;t be broken down like that because of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interconnectivity">interconnectivity</a>. Pro tip: Use a flowchart. When you are unable to put things in something as basic (read: made for dummies) as a flowchart; you haven&#8217;t simplified enough. Go back to Step 1.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3: Expect Stupidity</strong><br />
Never, and I mean never, expect people will understand what you wrote. In fact, aim for the life-form with the lowest intelligence imaginable and then dumb it down for good measure. If that means you spend 20 hours taking screenshots in <a href="http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/" target="_blank">Microsoft Word</a>, so be it.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4: Failsafe</strong><br />
You can never make anything foolproof. People are dumber than you give them credit for. Murphy&#8217;s Law states:</p>
<blockquote><p>If there is a wrong way of doing something; someone will do it that way.</p></blockquote>
<p>This is true of anything. The safest bet is to just give people one option and remove the human factor. Sometimes a decision must be made by the person. WRONG! Pick the default value (the choice causing the least amount of damage) and save yourself the stress. The smart ones will figure it out anyway, and you don&#8217;t need to worry about them.</p>
<p><strong>Step 5: Test, Rinse and Repeat</strong><br />
Find someone you have a good rapport with who has the level of experience someone using your document would have. Ask them to execute the document. Watch their actions and/or have them tell you what it said. This will give you valuable insight into how differently others view your writing. Make the necessary changes to your document. When there are no changes to be made you either didn&#8217;t pick someone stupid enough to read your document or your boss isn&#8217;t paying you nearly enough. You always need to make changes. Test again on a new person, you might have gotten it right the second time.</p>

<p>Jag fick mig ett gott skratt när jag såg den här första gången. Den tar så mycket som är Sverige och visar vad idiotiskt det egentligen är. Det är inte häftigt, sexigt eller coolt att betala skatt. Skatt är ett nödvändigt ont, men i Sverige så har <a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tr%C3%A4ngselskatt" target="_blank" titel="ett exempel på ren idioti">skatt</a> gått långt till överdrift. Ett klockrent exempel på hur överdriven skatten är, är just <a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocker" target="_blank" title="nej, den är inte rimlig">fastighetsskatten</a>. Som tur är vann inte de röd-gröna så vi kanske kan slippa en fastighetsskatt i fyra år till.</p>

		<title>Chrome Extensions No SEO Should Be Without</title>

In that post I covered how to set up <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/hacks/multiple-google-chrome-profiles-setup/" target="_blank">multiple user profiles in Chrome</a>. I mentioned in that post that I was able to finally make the switch because Chrome can (sort of) do all the things Firefox <del>can</del> used to be able to do.</p>
<p><strong>Screengrab! for Chrome</strong><br />

If you were a happy user of <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1146/" target="_blank">Screengrab!</a> in Firefox, then Chrome will be a disappointment to you. However, <a href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/cpngackimfmofbokmjmljamhdncknpmg?hl=en" target="_blank">Screen Capture (by Google)</a> offers a little less than Screengrab! but does have some extra features. Other extensions have a lot more functions, but simplicity is key for me. What sold me on this one apposed to other extensions was the blur-out feature. I take a lot of screenshots of sensitive data, and having the blur-out one click away just saves time.</p>
<p><strong>ShowIP for Chrome</strong><br />

I used <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/590/" target="_blank">ShowIP</a> and loved it in Firefox. The Chrome extension <a href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mdpfciefafhdagbdcnklaepcgeobgaok" target="_blank">Site&nbsp;Geo&nbsp;IP&nbsp;Locator</a> is actually one up. So you need to click to see the IP you are on, but when you do you see the location straight on the map. As with Screen Capture you get used to it. Different does not mean worse I guess.</p>
<p><strong>SearchStatus for Chrome</strong><br />

This was probably the hardest part to figure out as <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/321/" target="_blank">SearchStatus</a> was my go-to tool. I must have gone through about 20 so-called SEO extensions before I settled for <a href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/hbdkkfheckcdppiaiabobmennhijkknn" target="_blank">PageRank Status</a>. There are a lot of other extensions, but most of them have critical failures that render them, well, useless.</p>
<p><strong>Highlight Nofollow Links in Chrome</strong><br />
Highlighting nofollow links in Firefox used to be as easy as right-clicking SearchStatus and selecting &#8221;Highlight nofollow links&#8221;. Chrome actually has a nice extension called, you guessed it, <a href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/dfogidghaigoomjdeacndafapdijmiid" target="_blank">Nofollow</a>. I actually like this extension better than what I used to use in Firefox. However, you need to tweak the CSS a bit. Otherwise it&#8217;s actually kind of crap. Lucky for you, I did the hard part. Just copy-pasta:</p>

The cookies you are using right now are junk. If it were in my power to rip your cookies away from your code and chuck them over the hedge I would. There is nothing more important to an affiliate marketer than cookies. In fact, if you do any marketing online you really need those cookies. With Private Browsing aka. Incognito Mode, data privacy concerns and <a href="http://insidegoogle.com/ target="_blank" rel="nofollow">loony &#8221;watchdog&#8221; groups</a> it&#8217;s time to start using some more, shall we say, appropriate tactics.</p>
<p>I know of cookies so valuable that they are hand-placed in every nook and cranny of your visitors system.</p>
<p><strong>Users Hate Cookies</strong><br />

Even the name &#8221;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie" target="_blank">cookie</a>&#8221; is sweet. Imagine a world where we didn&#8217;t have any cookies. Look at Hammy. You take away his cookie and he has a sad. That is exactly how website owners feel when users throw away their cookies. Users are just mis- or uninformed.</p>
<p><strong>Enter the <em>Evercookie</em></strong><br />
A while back I found something really cool. It is known as the <a href="http://samy.pl/evercookie/" target="_blank">evercookie</a>. No other cookie has ever been harder to get rid of. The <em>evercookie</em> is so much more that just a HTTP cookie. If you got excited when you learned how to utilize <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Shared_Object" target="_blank">Flash cookies</a> then get ready to have your mind blown.<br />
<em>Evercookie</em> is not one cookie. <em>Evercookie</em> is an advanced system used to place and replace cookies even after they have been deleted.</p>
<p><strong>How <em>Evercookie</em> Works</strong><br />
Using javascript <em>evercookie</em> places cookies in as many forms and places as you can think of&#8230; and some places you never thought of placing cookies. What makes the system brilliant is that if <em>evercookie</em> finds that one or more of the originally placed cookies is missing, it is replaced. </p><p>Backstory: Firefox 3.6 happily crashed about five times a day. I got tired of it and I have now switched to <a href="http://www.google.com/chrom" target="_blank">Chrome</a>.</p>
<p>I loved <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/" target="_blank">Firefox</a> because of the <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/" target="_blank">plugins</a>. I have now found some adequate replacement extensions for Chrome, though (more in another post). I also liked Firefox better than Chrome because of multiple Profiles. I work with a lot of sites and I like to keep my accounts and logins apart from one another. You can do this with Chrome too. It&#8217;s not as simple, but still dead easy.</p>
<p><strong>How to Set Up Chome for Multiple Profiles</strong></p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Find Chrome User Data Folder</strong><br />
Chrome is not installed under Program Files but rather in your Local Application Data folder. In Vista and Windows 7 you can find Chrome here:<br />
<code>C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome</code><br />
Replace <code>[username]</code> with your username.<br />
Alternatively you can use the &#8221;run&#8221; function and enter <code>%localappdata%</code> and then click your way from there. That will also work in Windows XP. To get to the &#8221;run&#8221; function just hit <code>[Windows Button]</code>+<code>[R]</code> or locate it in the start menu
</li>
<li><strong>Create A New Profile</strong><br />
In the &#8221;<code>User Data</code>&#8221; folder there is a folder named &#8221;<code>Default</code>&#8221; (unless someone has been messing around with your system). Copy that folder and give it a new name. The first profile I created was for personal items so I went with &#8221;<code>personal</code>&#8221;. I&#8217;ll use that as a placeholder moving forward.
</li>
<li><strong>Start the New Chrome Browser &#8221;Install&#8221;</strong><br />
You now need to start the browser a first time (don&#8217;t ask me why &#8211; it&#8217;s stupid, I know). Unless you do this it seems not to work properly. Simply use the &#8221;run&#8221; function and paste this:<br />
<code>chrome.exe -user-data-dir="..\User Data\personal" -first-run</code><br />
Remember to replace &#8221;<code>personal</code>&#8221; with the name you chose for your profile in step 2.

<li><strong>Create New Shortcut</strong><br />
Copy the existing Chome Browser shortcut on your desktop. Give it a new name (it is a lot easier if you use the same name you used for the folder in step 2). Right-click and select &#8221;Properties&#8221; from the context menu. Paste the following path where it says &#8221;Target:&#8221;<br />
<code>C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe  -user-data-dir="..\User Data\personal"</code><br />
Remember: Change <code>[username]</code> to your username and change &#8221;<code>personal</code>&#8221; to the name you chose in step 2.

<li><strong>Theme It (optional)</strong><br />
You are actually done now. Congratulations!! However, I recommend that you choose a separate <a href="https://tools.google.com/chrome/intl/en/themes/google.html" target="_blank">Theme</a> for your new Chrome Browser Profile. Otherwise it will be indistinguishable from the &#8221;Default&#8221; install.

<p><strong>Multiple Chrome Installs vs. Multiple Firefox Installs</strong><br />
There are some key differences between setting up a new Chrome User Profile and setting up a Firefox User Profile. When you go through the back-end in Firefox instead of via the Profile Manager you can copy all of your add-ons. I haven&#8217;t been able to do that i Chrome yet. On the other hand, installing extensions in Chrome takes all of 12 seconds.</p>
<p>Until Firefox 4 is released I am steering well clear of Mozilla. Chrome is a lot more stable. I am also trying my luck with IE9, but it&#8217;s only been a pain so far.</p>

More specifically I have a bone to pick with the &#8221;Search Queries&#8221; section. For those of you who are not familiar with it Google has produced a section where you are shown some statistics for your website and how you are ranking.</p>

<p>I have omitted the queries column which is displayed to the left of the impressions. No need to see that really.</p>
<p>At first glance though, this table looks awesome. No need for any pesky web&nbsp;ranking tools &#8211; you have all the stats you need right there in your WMT account. Or do you?</p>
<p><strong>The Test and The Issue</strong><br />
I didn&#8217;t really like what I was seeing. The numbers didn&#8217;t seem to make sense, nor did they line up with web&nbsp;ranking reports or even the keyword analysis in <a href="http://www.google.com/analytics/" target="_blank">Google Analytics</a>. What I did was take a website with virtually zero traffic and no <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/seo/instant-and-personalized-search-the-end-of-seo/" target="_blank">presence in the SERPs</a>. I then reworked the homepage and optimized it for a relatively unique keyword and set about spamming Google searches.</p>
<p>I searched for two different variants of that keyword somewhere around 200-300 times each. This is what Google came up with in the Webmaster Tools Search Queries report:</p>

<p>Impressions for the day I tested (the big spike in the graph): <strong>2,900</strong></p>
<p>Wait. What?</p>
<p>At most there should have been around 600 more impressions for that site than the average <100 impressions per day. I accept rounding issues and so on and so forth, but seriously. <strong>480% inflated?</strong> Isn&#8217;t that a little bit heavy? I decided to do some more digging.</p>
<p>I took a site I work with that gets a fair amount of traffic. I picked a period to compare and dug out web&nbsp;ranking reports, analytics keyword reports and <a href="http://awstats.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">AWStats</a> traffic reports. I took all those numbers and compared them to the Search Queries report in Webmaster Tools. It took forever. The examples are crappy since I would have to cut out the keywords and URLs and replace them with <code>[blue widget]</code>, but I&#8217;ll give you the rundown of my findings. You&#8217;ll just have to take my word for it.</p>
<p><strong>Impressions</strong>: For any keyword in the Top 10 the impressions line up with the numbers in the <a href="https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal" target="_blank">AdWords Keyword Tool</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Clicks</strong>: This was the most accurate number, and correlated nicely with the GA keyword report. The more clicks the more inaccurate the numbers became though.</p>
<p><strong>CTR</strong> (click-through rate): Well, Google does do math right. The numbers are as accurate as clikcs/impressions*100 rounded to a full percent.</p>
<p><strong>Avg. Position</strong>: This number is interesting. It usually does display sort of what a well set up web&nbsp;ranking report would show you. Take personalized search into the equation. If your average position is higher than your web&nbsp;ranking report you are probably showing up in loyal user searches. If your average position is lower the reverse is true. However, I would not put any faith into it.</p>
<p><strong>Change</strong>: The changes sometimes make sense and sometimes they don&#8217;t. It depends on the period you select, but again Google knows how to do math. If the numbers are off the mark, then that means that the data from either the selected or &#8221;previous&#8221; period is off.</p>
<p><strong>My Conclusion</strong><br />
The Google Webmaster Tools Search Queries report is a great addition to an advanced SEO-Toolkit portfolio. It is one tool among many, but blindly hopping on the Google bandwagon is not something I would recommend.</p>

Jag skrev mitt förra inlägg i rent provokativt syfte för att se hur de skulle välja att hantera mitt inlägg. Det finns nämligen tre sätt att hantera bloggare som skriver med kritik och negativa åsikter.</p>

<li><strong>Ignore</strong><br />
<img src="http://christopher.wendels.net/wp-content/uploads/mata-inte-trollen.jpg" align="right" />Passera inte gå, och inkassera inte SEK&nbsp;2.000,00. Strunta helt enkelt i kritiken, eller som det så fint heter: <em>Mata inte trollen.</em> Bloggare som <a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flejma" target="_blank">flamar</a> är ute efter att man nappar på det. Så länge man inte väljer att gå in i diskussion så tappar de oftast intresse. Det är inte alltid en bra idé att dra sig tillbaka, men varför väcka en björn som sover?
</li>

<li><strong>Disarm</strong><br />
<img src="http://christopher.wendels.net/wp-content/uploads/ledsen-katt.jpg" align="right" style="margin-bottom:100px"/>Avväpna argumenten och gå in i debatten med snustorrt om fötterna. Väldigt ofta så är det hela ett missförstånd eller en part som behöver uppmärksamhet, men tröttnade efter 300 minuter i telefonkö. Den här typen av individ lugnar oftast ner sig (och skäms kanske lite) om man kryper till korset med svansen mellan benen, erkänner ett misstag eller förklarar vad som hänt. Skulle man efter ett första försök till sans och balans inse att man har med ett troll att göra är det bara att inse, att hur man kommer man inte att kunna lösa situationen.

<li><strong>Charge in Guns Blazing</strong><br />
<img src="http://christopher.wendels.net/wp-content/uploads/atombomb-inga-fangar.jpg" align="right" />Ta i för kung och fosterland, krossa motståndet och blinka inte. Det här är jäkligt dumt, även när man vet med sig att man har 100% rätt. Det finns inget värre än en bloggare med ett sårat ego. Speciellt inte en bloggare som vet vad han håller på med. Ibland är det dock nödvändigt att försvara sig och visa lite ryggrad.
</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Fallet City Network</strong><br />
I mitt inlägg så anklagade jag City Network för att manipulera dem som deltog i tävlingen till att sätta en länk. Sanningen i det vet bara City Network själva och det är orättvist att hävda något bara för att det skulle kunna vara sant. Även om det skulle vara sant, så ser jag inget fel i det. Personligen så kanske jag hade valt ett mjukare tillvägagångssätt. Med mjukare menar jag att man inte skriver direkt att man kräver en viss typ av länk, med en viss typ av ankartext. Nu var det heller inte ett direkt krav, men det är så man läser det på sidan och medelsvensson-bloggaren fattar det garanterat inte. Jag kan erkänna att jag själv använt mig av långt mycket fulare taktiker för att samla länkar och utnyttja folks oerfarenhet. Den som har minst en timmes skolning inom <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/seo/" target="_blank">SEO</a> kan välja att inte delta om man inte gillar spelreglerna.</p>
<p><strong>Vad City Network gjorde rätt</strong><br />
Johan från City Network valde att skriva en kommentar på min blogg. Han informerade mig om att jag deltog i tävlingen trots att jag satt deras länk som nofollow. Samtidigt fick jag information om hur City Network ser på tävlingen och varför upplägget var som angivet. Självklart fick jag också inte bara en, utan två komplimanger i kommentaren. Det är smart att använda honung när man ska locka till sig björnar, eller bloggare för den delen. Verkligen ett bra sätt att hantera min kritik, eller snarare mina åsikter. Jag var så nöjd med hans svar att jag nu väljer att skriva bra saker. Det är det som händer när man är trevlig mot folk på Internet. Folk är trevliga tillbaks.</p>
<p><strong>Vad hade kunnat gå snett</strong><br />
<img style="margin-top:50px;margin-bottom:50px" src="http://christopher.wendels.net/wp-content/uploads/kunde-slutat-illa.jpg" align="right" />Självklart hade saker och ting kunnat se annorlunda ut. Det absolut värsta hade varit att inte inkludera mig i tävlingen. Då hade jag inte dragit mig för att använda alla medel för att smutskasta tävlingen, och långt värre, de föredömliga bloggarna som ställer upp med sina namn. Dessa är <a href="http://blogg.tkj.se/s-hanterar-ditt-fretag-negativ-kritik-i-bloggar/" target="_blank">Tommy K. Johansson</a>, <a href="http://www.bard.nu/vinn-en-ipad-hos-city-network/" target="_blank">Andreas Bard</a> och <a href="http://jesperastrom.com/social-media/how-to-analyze-viral-campaigns-emetrics-stockholm/" target="_blank">Jesper Åström</a>.</p>
<p>City Networks hade även kunnat strunta helt i mitt inlägg, ta med mig i tävlingen och bara släppa det. I det läget hade jag också släppt det utan vidare (men då hade jag heller inte skrivit det här inlägget). Självklart fanns det ett tredje alternativ: Guns Blazing. Det hade inte varit speciellt smart det heller eftersom jag då hade känt mig dumförklarad. I en bloggares (dock inte i just dennes) ögon finns det generellt ingen större skymf. Jag hade i det läget varit ännu mer motiverad att bevisa mina &#8221;teorier&#8221; med samma resultat som ovan.</p>

<p><strong>I See What You Did There</strong></p>
<p>Sidan som de kräver att man länkar till för att vara med har just nu 30 tweets, 31 push och 56 delningar på Facebook med 52 kommentarer.</p>
<p>Jag vill gissa att mindre än 10% av de som länkat till tävlingen varit intelligenta nog att sätta ett <code>rel=nofollow</code> attribut på länken.</p>
<p>Vad kostar en iPad? &#8211; Just det, rätt billigt sätt att köpa länkar på. Jag jobbar ju med det här, så jag ser igenom det hela, men flera andra gör det inte.</p>
<p><strong>Varför ska jag länka med nofollow?</strong><br />
För att dra det långa kort. Du sätter en länk mot en eventuell betalning &#8211; en iPad. Enligt Googles riktlinjer är detta att ta betalt för en länk. De som säljer länkar bestraffas gärna för det. Däremot är risken otroligt liten i Sverige. Jag ser dagligen hur sidor köper och säljer länkar som idioter, utan några konsekvenser. Google bryr sig inte om vad som händer i Sverige lika mycket som, säg Tyskland, men det kommer inte att hålla i sig.</p>
<p>Undrar om jag vinner en iPad. Skulle inte tro det. Det som skulle vara intressant att veta är om mitt bidrag till tävlingen fortfarande är giltigt trots att jag satt länken som nofollow?</p>

<p><strong>How OhLife Works</strong><br />

You then simply write down how your day went. Even writing a few notes such as what work was like, or if the sun came out goes a long way. The online journal is nothing like a blog, Twitter, Facebook, tumblr or anything else. The messages are private. They are only there for you and your benefit.</p>
<p>You can then browse through your own history (as seen here on the right). A peek at your past, if you will. It really is cool and by far the best online journal I have ever come in contact with.</p>
<p><strong>Once You Start You Can&#8217;t Stop</strong><br />
This is one of the great features. Once you get started there is no quitting. Sure, you can turn off the emails. You can ignore updates. But what happens when you do? Once you get around one month of entries together, and actually go through them you won&#8217;t want to stop. You start to imagine what you might be reading one year, or even ten years from now.</p>
<p>People will argue that it is the same no matter what you use. I say no. I have tried multiple times to start a journal. I always gave it up. Either because I forgot, or got bored&#8230; I almost quit OhLife too. I said I would do my challenge, write this post and then quit. Guess what: I&#8217;m still going strong with a perfect track record. I haven&#8217;t missed a single day.</p>
<p><strong>The Internet Issue</strong><br />
The only thing that might break me is if I go without Internet access for any length of time at some point, but even that wouldn&#8217;t be a deal breaker for me. I would jot on napkins if I had to just to keep going, and then send in my emails like a good little boy.</p>
<p><strong>Keeping A Journal Is Something Everyone Should Do</strong><br />
I honestly believe that everyone should keep a journal. I wish someone would have thought of this sooner. Where was I and what was I doing on this day five years ago? I don&#8217;t have the slightest idea&#8230; and that makes me kind of sad. I&#8217;m sure I have the memories, I just don&#8217;t have any triggers to recall them by.</p>
<p><strong>Is Electronic Data Really Private</strong><br />
Living in Germany really makes you think about things like privacy. I grew up in Sweden, where, for better or worse, privacy does not exist. You can even go down to the local tax office and ask for your neighbors tax forms. In Germany I have a friend who actually refused to sign up for an event because the only way to sign up was by entering your email on a website.</p>
<p>I have read the <a href="http://ohlife.com/privacy" target="_blank">OhLife privacy policy</a>. There is nothing there to even indicate how your information could be used. In fact it states clearly that:</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re unhappy with the service for any reason, you can delete your account in your account settings. This permanently deletes your account and all of your entries.
</p></blockquote>
<p>The only sentence that gave me pause was this one:</p>

<p>OhLife only collects information it needs so that you can use the service.

<p>So OhLife might use whatever I write to profile me and then show me ads. That is what Facebook does and that is what Google does. No difference there, and I don&#8217;t really mind. I am actually a big fan of targeted ads. You&#8217;d have to be an idiot not to be, but that is a rant for another post.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br />
I love OhLife and I hope I never stop using it. It is a great service, and I encourage anyone and everyone to sign up!</p>

Antwort: Ist schlecht.</p>
<p>Die anderen Jim Blocks in Hamburg sind viel besser. Das Personal ist höflicher und da ist weniger Stress.</p>
<p>Wenn ich €6,20 für einen Burger im Fast-Food-Laden bezahle erwarte ich schon ein bisschen mehr.</p>

The first part lies in the first part of the quote. It illustrates why spam could work so well. People, your average <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Bloggs" target=_"blank">Joe Bloggs</a> I mean, are clueless as to how certain things online work. It took people years to <del datetime="2010-09-22T06:30:00+00:00">learn</del> start learning just how to do email. Why do you think email scams work so well? Argue, if you will that they don&#8217;t, but then why do you still get them? When something costs money, and doesn&#8217;t make any money, it ceases to exist. There are no free <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_ain%27t_no_such_thing_as_a_free_lunch" target="_blank">lunches</a>. Having established that people, 20 years in, still don&#8217;t have a clue on how email works; what does that tell you about an overhyped medium like <a href="http://twitter.com/wendels" target="_blank">Twitter</a>?</p>
<p>The second part is that every person who has ever worked in Online Marketing knows that certain areas of the web are just ridden with spam. These are places like open social networks, forums, blog comments and, of course, email. The same people also know that the most common spam is stuff that people either want, but can&#8217;t get because it would require money and/or hard work, or plain and simple how-to-get-rich-fast &#8221;guides&#8221;. Stuff like performance medication, <del datetime="2010-09-22T06:30:00+00:00">fake</del> replica goods and pyramid schemes.<br />
How do you explain all that in one sentence? You got it. Twittagra!</p>

I&#8217;ll break it down for you. The quote is awesome. It packs so many elements into one simple&#8230; well&#8230; word, really. Unfortunately, at the most 0,1% of the people who saw the movie understood the full brilliance.</p>
<p><strong>Wait, wasn&#8217;t I promised a tactic somewhere in this post?</strong><br />
Yes, you were. Actually, I&#8217;ve already given it to you. Do the math. This isn&#8217;t one of those &#8221;This is so easy it made me rich in 5 minutes and now I live in the Bahamas&#8221; tactics. It&#8217;s one of those pesky &#8221;You actually have to put in some work into this&#8221; tactics. I would bet that if you aren&#8217;t smart enough to get it on your own, you are not smart enough to pull it off, but I&#8217;ll still give you a 5 step program.<br />

</p><p><a href="http://www.ebs.edu/index.php?id=853&#038;tx_ttnews[backPid]=286&#038;tx_ttnews[tt_news]=1184&#038;cHash=CC11841284484399" rel="nofollow" target="blank">Alkoholverbot an der EBS</a>. Ich kenne ein paar EBSler &#8211; und Jungs, es tut mir echt Leid. Das kann einfach kein Spaß sein.</p>
<p>Wer mal an einer Uni studiert hat, wo die Ansprüche so hoch sind wie an der EBS, weiß dass man einfach die Entspannung braucht. Klar, muss man sich nicht tot saufen aber feiern muss man schon können. Wo ich an der <a href="http://www.whu.edu/cms/" target="_blank">WHU</a> studiert habe wüsste ich die Freiheit zu schätzen, die einem in Deutschland erlaubt wird. In Schweden sieht die Sache <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_prohibition_referendum,_1922" target="_blank"">ganz anders</a> aus.</p>
<p>Die Studenten haben es echt <a href="http://www.welt.de/die-welt/regionales/article9426510/Blaues-Blut.html">übertrieben</a>, aber wie viele waren das tatsächlich? Im Zweifelsfall haben ein handvoll Studenten Mist gebaut &#8211; und jetzt dürfen alle dafür bezahlen. Spannend finde ich jetzt wie das ganze weiter geht. Anscheinend ist das so, dass an der EBS kein Alkohol mehr getrunken wird. Allerdings waren es nicht nur die Studenten die ab und zu mal Alkohol getrunken haben. Wie ich die Sache verstanden habe gilt das Alkoholverbot nicht nur für Studenten sondern auch für Mitarbeiter, Veranstalter, Gäste und so weiter.</p>
<p>Vielleicht war es doch nicht so schlau ein generelles Alkoholverbot nach außen zu kommunizieren. Jetzt hat man nämlich keine Möglichkeit ausnahmen zu machen.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;mit sofortiger Wirkung ein Alkoholverbot auf dem gesamten Campus der EBS verfügt.</p></blockquote>
<p>Hätte man das anders formuliert wie, &#8221;für Studenten gilt&#8230;&#8221;, oder, &#8221;bis ein Verhaltenskodex in Kraft tretet gilt&#8230;&#8221;, hätte man ohne weiteres den vernünftigen Umgang mit Alkohol erlauben können. Vielleicht war die Schulleitung dessen bewusst. Wenn das nicht so ist werden die Studenten es nicht erlauben, dass man eben Ausnahmen macht, ohne dass für die Studenten auch Ausnahmen gemacht werden. Was natürlich nicht möglich ist ohne das Alkoholverbot aufzuheben, und weh das spricht sich in <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheingau" target="blank">Rheingau</a> rum.</p>

</p><p>I was just over on another <a href="http://robsellen.com/" "target="_blank">blog</a> with two things worth mentioning.</p>
<p>The first is that the site uses a <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/" target="_blank">WP-Plugin</a> called <a rel="nofollow" href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/commentluv/" target="_blank">commentluv</a>. (today we also define irony)</p>
<p>It is not a comment <del datetime="2010-09-14T13:48:18+00:00">system</del> plugin I like, nor am planning to use it since I use the <a href="http://disqus.com/overview/" target="_blank">DISQUS</a> comment system. I feel that DISQUS adds community value and is great for engagement. One of the reasons I&#8217;m not a fan of commentluv is the sudden need for a <a href="http://robsellen.com/about-and-policies/comment-policy/">comment policy</a>.</p>
<p>The comment policy was the second thing worth mentioning. I read this. The whole thing. I really liked it. However, seeing as I didn&#8217;t want to come off as a comment-spammer, I decided to write this post instead. One could say that commentluv is counter-productive. Instead of finding a blog with interesting content and adding my thoughts to those pages, I opted for leaving the first comment I made on another post and then just not saying anything else. Of course, someone is going to tell me that since I now wrote a post the result is even better. *deep breaths*</p>
<p>I have probably viewed 20 blogs in the past 24 hours. How many have I linked to? I linked to this particular individual blog because it had great content and helped me make a point.</p>
<p>With DISQUS I have less work with moderation and I can have more community interaction. That is what I am looking for. Sure, commentluv might get you more traffic (to be discussed), but DISQUS offers more engagement. When someone posts a comment here, it&#8217;s to say something. They do not say something to get a link. Huge difference.</p>
<p>I will not be implementing dofollow on this blog. What I will be doing is spreading some <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/linkbuilding/the-5-reasons-why-we-link/" target="_blank">love</a> in a different way. Anyone who engages on my blog obviously has shared interests with me. I&#8217;ll pop onto their site form time to time and add it to my feed. Once I see or read something nice, I might just write a post about it &#8211; and violà, the links are there for all to see.</p>
<p>What I have considered is adding a dofollow-whitelist. Basically let the nice and frequently commenting people have their links magically drop the <code>rel="nofollow"</code>. I am still wavering on the issue. Anyone have any thoughts?</p>

</p><p>Google Instant Search has generated a lot of buzz and the <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/seo/instant-search-and-next-gen-kw-stuffing/">implications for SEO</a> are already being discussed.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s all just get one thing straight. SEO is not dead. This is not the end of the world. In fact, if you are even half-good at what you do as an SEO, you realize this has potential written all over it!</p>
<p>Some people, like Steve Rubel, are <a href="http://www.steverubel.com/google-instant-makes-seo-irrelevant" target="_blank">saying</a> that SEO is now indeed irrelevant. I couldn&#8217;t disagree more. Other people, like Chris Crum, seem to be <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2010/09/08/does-google-instant-mark-the-end-of-seo" target="_blank">unsure</a>. There are also those out there, like Brian Harnish, who <a href="http://www.artistic-seo.com/blog/2010/09/calm-down-people-its-not-the-end-of-seo/" target="_blank">seem to</a> still have their heads attached to their shoulders.</p>
<p>What the community is reacting to now is the same thing that Webmaster World and other <a href="http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/021303.html" target="_blank">SE-related forums</a> started going through when <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/personalized-search-for-everyone.html" target="_blank">Personalized Search</a> came along. So, for close to a year now people in the SEO industry have been in a relative state of panic.</p>
<p><img src="http://christopher.wendels.net/wp-content/uploads/SEOs-calm-down.jpg" align="right" style="margin:10px"><strong>Everybody: Calm down!</strong><br />
I could list dozens of reasons and arguments to why SEO is not dead. I could go on and on, point by point. Personally I think one is enough, but to give you the general idea here are the three main reasons to still do search engine optimization:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>The macro perspective:</strong><br />
This is, by far, the biggest reason to why SEO is not dead. First of all, let&#8217;s just define some things here: SEO is a lot more than just rankings, but for the sake of this argument we shall pretend that SEO is nothing more than the SERPs.<br />
Charles results show him Pepsi as the number one result when he searches for &#8221;soda&#8221;. This is because his search history is skewed toward cola-type beverages and the brand <a href="http://www.pepsi.com/" target="_blank">Pepsi</a>. Milly on the other hand searches for &#8221;soda&#8221; and the results spit out <a href="http://www.orangina.com/" target="_blank">Orangina</a>. This is what we call a micro perspective. We are looking at each individual in turn, and yes; no two people are seeing the same results.<br />
When you aggregate all the search results, the personal search, the local search, and the instant search, from all &#8216;individual&#8217; search queries &#8211; what you end up with is the same as before. The websites ranked according to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Search" target="_blank">Algorithm</a>.</li>

<li><strong>First timers and opt-outs:</strong><br />
There is such a thing as a first-time searcher. A browser with no cookies. A searcher with no Google Account. Incognito and Private Browsing mode. What about the search queries Google has no data for, even if they have a history for that person? We can argue all day that these results are also skewed, but because of my first point your <a href="http://images.memegenerator.net/Wow/ImageMacro/1868864/There-is-a-dinosaur-riding-on-a-sharks-back-with-a-laser-Your-argument-is-invalid.jpg" target="_blank">argument is invalid</a>. More importantly, how you rank for that specific term has become even more important. Which brings us to:</li>

<li><strong>Rankings matter more than ever:</strong><br />
Rankings are more important now than ever, because if a user clicks your site in the SERPs and then browses your site, you will be ranked better for their queries in the future. Mind-boggling isn&#8217;t it?</li>
</ol>
<p>SEO was never just about the rankings. Sure, my task as an SEO is to drive traffic to websites through search engines. My job was never to land the number one slot in the Google SERPs even though that sure <del datetime="2010-09-10T13:03:57+00:00">used to be</del> <em><strong>is</strong></em> a very important aspect of my job, and the most important KPI for clients.</p>
<p>In my opinion the real challenge in SEO has just begun. This is where the fun starts!</p>

Rättare sagt kanske jag har blivit påmind av vikten utav att alltid ha en back-up, att aldrig leka med saker som är live utan att testa på beta först, och hur frustrerade det är att debugga PHP med <code>die('gotThisFarTryFurtherDown');</code></p>

<p><a href="http://www.google.com/instant/" target="_blank">Google Instant</a> has been rolled out and the blogosphere is all the buzz with this latest &#8221;feature&#8221;. You know how you file a bug report, and then IT gets back to you to let you know that the bug isn&#8217;t a bug, but a feature. That&#8217;s the kind of feature I feel we are dealing with when we talk about Google Instant Search.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll not go into a post about it because in the world I live in where we all move at cloud speed, this is all old news. <p>I dagarna har jag bläddrat i <a href="http://www.domainvermarktermagazin.de/" target="_blank">Domainvermarkter Magazin</a> för att vidga mina horisonter. Jag tycker att fenomenet &#8221;domaining&#8221; är spännande och att de många olika filurerna i branschen är mycket underhållande. Finns också en hel del riktigt trevliga som <a href="http://www.teaminternet.de/" target="_blank">TI</a>.</p>
<p>En artikel var så helt åt fanders fel på grund av saknad kunskap, att jag tyckte att jag skriver något om det. En sak måste man veta och det är att &#8221;domainers&#8221; vill få sina domäner sålda till så högt pris som möjligt. Goddag yxskaft. I detta fallet rörde det sig om en domän som skulle gå för €&nbsp;35&nbsp;000.</p>
<p>Killen i fråga &#8221;Domainberater &#038; Broker&#8221; börjar med att han har använt sig av Google Keyword Tool och hämtat att domänen har &#8221;50&nbsp;000 sökningar och €&nbsp;10 CPC&#8221;. Mot den bakgrunden har snillet sedan gjort sina beräkningar.</p>
<p><strong>De 50&nbsp;000 Sökningarna</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Den som någonsin legat etta på Google, och det är långt ifrån alla som har, vet att Googles verktyg inte alltid prickar rätt. Lägg sedan till att plats ett på Google i genomsnitt får 42% av alla klick.</li>
<li>Beräknar man att sökbegrepp med hård konkurrens ofta har sponsrade resultat därtill, så ska man vara glad om man kan dra 30% av sökningarna.</li>
<li>Nu ska vi inte glömma att en stor del utav Google Keyword Tools beräkningar påverkas utav domainerna själva: Domänparkeringen förstås! Hur många domainare som helst monetariserar sina parkerade sidor med AdSense. Grattis! Detta påverkar självklart talen.</li>
<li>Då killen uppenbart har kass koll, så har han förmodligen lyckats använda standard-inställningen på &#8221;bred&#8221; och inte &#8221;exakt&#8221; som är en helt annan femma. Dock är ju detta bara ett begrundat antagande.</li>
<li>Ett litet exkurs tips är att Googles <a href="http://www.google.se/sktool/#" target="_blank">SK Tool</a> verkar vara lite säkrare nu för tiden.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>€&nbsp;10 CPCn</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Återigen har snillet bevisat sin okunskap genom att anta att siffrorna i Keyword Tool skulle vara riktiga. Vi som jobbar med sånt här vet att CPC-siffrorna oftast är lite uppblåsta.</li>
</ul>
<p>Eftersom artikeln har utgått från ett helt felaktigt tänkande och trasiga siffror är alla vidare beräkningar som tagna ur luften.</p>

</p><p>I love linking. I link to lots of places all the time. I have yet to turn down a link request that made sense. Sometimes it takes me forever to get it done, and sometimes I&#8217;ll forget, so I need to be reminded, but I&#8217;ll always link in the end.</p>
<p><strong>PageRank | Link-Juice | Popularity</strong><br />
You can call this what you want. At the end of the day, a vital part of getting a website off the ground and into the <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=SERP" target="_blank">SERPs</a> is getting links. No secret. Whenever anyone tells you they know the secret to ranking number one in the SERPs you can call them a lair to their face. There is no secret. Just get the most links and you win. End of story.</p>
<p><strong>OK&#8230; not the end of the story.</strong><br />
For so many reasons! First off not all links are created equal. I have seen websites with hundreds of low quality links be trashed by new pages (and don&#8217;t give me any of the QDF crap. Not that kind of keyword) with nothing but internal links.</p>
<p><strong>zOMG! If I link to others I lose my PR</strong><br />
It never fails to amaze me how much of the Internet actually just is the bottom of the barrel scraped together and posted online. Monkeys could do a better job than many <del datetime="2010-08-31T12:50:31+00:00">webmasters</del> bloggers. When a site links to another website, it will not &#8216;lose&#8217; any PR. The relative weight passed on to other sites linked to decreases. True, but internal and external links are still two different types of sides. Consider a page on your website a steak. You can have just the steak, which is fine, but rather dull. You put some internal links on that page to make it more interesting. We shall call &#8216;the placing of internal links&#8217; your baked potato. If you are a <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=meat%20and%20potatoes%20man" target="_blank">meat and potatoes man</a>, then you&#8217;re solid. However, what makes my mouth water is that little bit extra. You know, that little detail that makes me go,<br />
&#8221;I&#8217;m going to have the steak&#8221;. Your external links, those are your extra side order.</p>
<p><strong>Why I link:</strong><br />
I link because I care. People who do not link are evil, greedy, manipulative, and, worst of all, complete muppets. I shouldn&#8217;t have to be pitching why you should link, but since there seems to be a need for it I will. I wish I could post when not to link, and have the problem be too much linking.</p>

<li><strong>Links are free</strong><br />
A link costs zero, nill, nothing, zip, zilch to maintain. You place it in a post or on a page that would be there anyway and it stays there. The only people who lose are the people at the other end of outbound links on the same page, but they&#8217;ve already won since you&#8217;re linking to them.</li>
<li><strong>Link out, link in</strong> (win if read in Miagi&#8217;s voice)<br />
The chances that someone will link to you, after you have mentioned them, increases by a factor of <code>[insert insanely huge number]</code>. Think about it. What were the chances of them linking to you first?</li>
<li><strong>Links are trust</strong><br />
A link to another URL shows trust for that page. Trust implies friendship, or at least some form of a relationship. You want to build relationships, it&#8217;s how society works. learn2social.</li>
<li><strong>Relationships win</strong><br />
You got it. The SERPs are all about relevance. When pages talking about the same or related topics link to each other it shows that <a href="http://www.seobythesea.com/?p=4211" target="_blank">they are connected</a>. This builds <a href="http://seanseo.com/seo/authority-links-in-content/" target="_blank">authority</a> for that subject. Even if the page is your <a href="http://www.sokmotorkonsult.se/" target="_blank">direct competitor</a>, linking to them when they have <em>the</em> number one site for blue widgets won&#8217;t harm you. Give them blue widgets and focus on green widgets where you have the better page. Focus on sharing where you can gain from it.</li>
<li><strong>Links help</strong><br />
A relevant link helps users. Using weird words and <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/smwc-and-other-essential-seo-jargon" target="_blank">technical jargon</a>? Link to an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopedia" target="_blank">encyclopedia</a>. Writing in a foreign language? Link to a dictionary. Referencing another blog? Link to it. When a user can get more information by just clicking to a new browser window he is happy. When a user needs to take that action on his own, then he&#8217;s off to see a better website. Search Engines aren&#8217;t much different.</li>

<p><img align="right" src="/wp-content/uploads/are-you-a-wizard.jpg" alt="Internet and Website Wizard" />I wrote all about what I saw coming from Google and how their own services like <a href="http://www.google.com/chat/voice/index.html" target="_blank">Google Voice and Video</a> chat would take <a href="http://www.skype.com/" target="_blank">Skype</a> down. Now, I am really frustrated because if I had posted this six days ago, as I intended, I would have predicted the future and proved I am a wizard.</p>
<p>Now all I do is come off all lame, and like a thousand other bloggers, say <a href="http://www.google.com/" target="_blank">Google</a> has done something new, so I should write about that.</p>
<p>Why is buying Skype not really a good idea, if you are the biggest company on the Interwebs? To avoid the TL;DR scenario I&#8217;ll give you the one-word answer: <strong><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competition_law" target="_blank">antitrust</a></strong></p>
<p>So from now on I guess I&#8217;ll be publishing my articles when I write them and not wait for more time to get it &#8221;just right&#8221;. Lesson learned.</p>

<p>Jag hade inte tänkt på det, men jo. En blank röst hjälper även <a href="http://christopher.wendels.net/svenska/politik/toppluvan-som-hotar-mangfalden/" target="_blank"">Sverigedemokraterna in i riksdagen</a>. Hur man ser på den saken kan man tvista om, men personligen tror jag inte man stödjer Sverigedemokraterna om man lägger en blank röst.</p>

</p><p>Wikipedia är, för den som arbetar med sökmotoroptimering, något rakt ur <a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante">Dantes fantasi</a>. Wikipedia bara suger åt sig länkar och de som skriver är mycket duktiga på att sätta interna länkar. I och med att Wikipedia är baserat på, att ett stort antal användare lägger ner en liten del av sin tid så finns möjligheter ett normalt företag inte har. Vissa tyska tidningar har arméer av praktikanter som inte gör annat än att placera relaterade länkar i artiklarna som publiceras. Det är en tjänst Wikipedia gör sig själv.</p>
<p>Jag läste en teori om att <a href="http://www.wedholm.net/2010/08/11/har-wikipedia-borjat-sokmotoroptimera/">Wikipedia skulle ha börjat sökmotoroptimera</a> mot bakgrund av att nyckelord numera skrivs i fetstil. Jag skulle vara mycket förvånad om så var fallet.</p>
<p><strong>Varför Wikipedia inte har börjat optimera:</strong><br />
Jag kan inte med säkerhet säga att Wikipedia inte optimerar, men det finns ett argument som talar emot påståendet ovan och ett generellt argument som talar emot att Wikipedia pysslar med sökmotoroptimering.</p>
<p>Fetstil text fungerar inte längre för att optimera. Det är helt enkelt en sådan liten del av Googles 200 faktorer att det inte är värt det. Jag har testat detta, och resultatet var gott och väl inom felmarginalen. Det enda stället som fetstil verkade ha någon som helst påverkan var i ankar-text. Jag säger &#8216;verkade&#8217; eftersom andra faktorer (som länkars placeringar) vägde in testet gav inget rent resultatet.</p>
<p>Hur din text är formaterad, storleken, färgen &#8211; till och med H1/H2/H3/H4 är av näst intill ingen betydelse. Det viktiga är att texten, som sådan, är där. Hur text är formaterad är dock fortfarande en rankingfaktor. Allt annat lika så kommer sidan med fetstil på nyckelorden att placera sig bättre. Då ska vi bara hitta två sidor där 99.9% är exakt lika för att testa.</p>

<p>Självklart så ska man se till att ha det städat och ordnat, men en perfekt optimerad sida kan fortfarande slås ut mycket enkelt av andra faktorer. Den största anledningen att använda format för att framhäva text är användarvänlighet.</p>
<p>Användarvänligheten för mig till det generella argumentet för varför jag inte tror att Wikipedia optimerar sina sidor. Det är inte därför sidan existerar. Sidan är skapad av och för användare. På många sätt så är det som är användarvänligt även sökmotorvänligt när det kommer till Wikipedia. Detta eftersom sidan är en enda lång text. Genom att man gör nyckelord mer synliga blir det lättare för läsaren att orientera sig.</p>
<p>När jag jobbar med layout så ser jag till att ha nyckelord och sökmotoroptimeringen långt fram i bussen, men jag ser även till att användaren kommer tycka om min sida &#8211; annars lär han inte länka till den.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Jag tycker att svensk trafikpolitik har misslyckats på ett antal punkter. Genom att bo i Tyskland så har jag haft en möjlighet att se hur vi skulle kunna ha haft det i Sverige.</p>
<p>I Sverige finns något som heter &#8221;<a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nollvision" target="_blank">nollvision</a>&#8221; i trafiken. Det kommer alltid att ske trafikolyckor, men någon tyckte det var en bra PR grej att hävda att Sverige minsann skulle göra sig av med sådant. Det kommer dö folk i trafiken. Det dör folk överallt hela tiden, men det är politiskt sexigt att säga att i Sverige så ska det minsann inte dö folk i trafiken.</p>
<p>Självklart så ska man få ner antalet döda och skadade i trafiken så mycket som möjligt, men var går gränsen? När blir det för kostsamt att rädda ytterligare ett liv, om man beaktar <a href="http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagen_om_avtagande_avkastning" target="_blank">lagen om avtagande avkastning</a>? Det är en ideologisk fråga som jag inte tänker försöka besvara. Faktumet kvarstår. Det enda sättet att säkerställa att ingen dör i trafiken är att helt enkelt inte ha någon trafik alls.</p>
<p>Jag tycker vi ska ha trafik. Jag tycker även att det många gånger är för låg hastighetsbegränsning på vägarna. Det är ofta även förvirrande. Det finns vägar som var 90-vägar i hur många år som helst, och nu plötsligt är dessa 70- eller 80-sträckor. Man tackar.</p>
<p>Skulle man utav gammal vana fortsätta i sina dryga 90 på en sådan sträcka har man snabbt ett problem&#8230; eller kanske inte. Idag hittade jag något extra kul. En <a href="http://tagen.se/" target="_blank">fortkörningsförsäkring</a>. Hur coolt är inte det? Just nu så bor jag inte i Sverige och har ingen bil. Hade så däremot varit fallet hade jag <a href="http://tagen.se/order.html" target="_blank">skaffat försäkringen</a> med en gång. Hej och hå!</p>
<p>Försäkringen ligger på SEK 595,- om året. Det betyder att denna tjänsten lönar sig från den första fortkörningen. Visst, man är begränsad till 3 fortkörningar om året, men där ryker lappen ändå. Försäkringen täcker också endast hastighetsöverträdelser mellan 1-30km/h på svenska 70-120km/h sträckor. Det vill säga att man är försäkrad för klantighet och dumhet, precis som det ska vara. Kör man mer än 150km/h så vet man att man med sig att man har varit <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShacMAn_HK8" target="_blank">ute och cyklat</a>. Bränner man förbi en skola i mer än 30km/h så har man inte bakom ratten på en bil att göra ändå.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Jag tycker om att läsa <a href="http://www.lindqvist.com/" target="_blank">Nikke Lindqvists blogg</a>. Han tar upp intressanta teman mellan sökmotoroptimering och politik och lite annat kul. Igår läste jag ett inlägg där han har trollat fram en <a href="http://www.lindqvist.com/toppluva-mot-sverigedemokraterna/" target="_blank">toppluva mot Sverigedemokraterna</a>. Jag tycker det är en kul idé. I yngre dagar så hade jag en t-shirt med liknande motiv, fast då var det vänstern som hamnade i papperskorgen.</p>
<p>Först och främst så vill jag göra klart två saker innan jag fortsätter med det här inlägget. Jag bor utomlands och har redan röstat. Jag röstade inte på Sverigedemokraterna.</p>
<p>Däremot så stödjer jag partiets existens. Jag tror mycket starkt på en politisk mångfald. Det demokratiska systemet vi har bygger på en öppen och transparent kommunikation. Jag blir upprörd när jag hör partier som säger att de absolut kommer vägra att föra en debatt eller dialog med Sverigedemokraterna. Det är inte hälsosamt. Om man inte diskuterar de punkter som Sverigedemokraterna tar upp och de åsikter som SD företräder så har vi en grupp i Sverige vars åsikter inte representeras.</p>
<p>När vi inte diskuterar och inte lämnar alla åsikter fritt rum att existera så hotar vi inte bara den politiska mångfalden utan även demokratin. När SD-politiker hotas till livet i sina valda ämbeten, då är vi riktigt långt ute till havs utan en segelbåt! Nu är det ju så, som vi förmodligen alla misstänker, att det är den radikala vänstern som står för den typen av odemokratiskt beteende &#8211; och den radikala vänstern är ett mycket större hot emot Sverige än vad SD någonsin kommer att bli.</p>
<p>Jag säger inte att en mössa kommer att göra någon skillnad hit eller dit. Själv tycker jag att den är rätt rolig. Problemet är att Sverigedemokraterna inte behöver mer allmänt dålig PR. Argumentet >>SD är dåliga för de är främlingsfientliga<< är helt meningslöst eftersom det finns många människor som uppenbarligen inte delar den synen, men väl håller med partiet i vissa frågor. Det bästa sättet att hantera Sverigedemokraterna är att tackla dem där de är som sämst: i den politiska arenan. Låter man SD härja fritt utan att diskutera de frågor som deras väljare stödjer så tvingar man dessa personer till partiet.</p>

		<title>OhLife: The More Things Change&#8230;</title>

<p>I was just on <a href="http://techcrunch.com/" target="_blank">TechCrunch</a>. By I was just on TechCrunch I mean I opened my Google Reader and browsed through the top streams from blogs and people I follow. Sometimes things just pop out and I feel I just have to find out more.</p>
<p>Side note: I have always wanted a journal. The closest thing I have to a journal is <a href="http://twitter.com/wendels" target="_blank">my twitter stream</a> combined with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/christopher.wendels" target="_blank">my facebook</a> status updates. I have always just been far too lazy.</p>
<p><a href="http://ohlife.com/" target="_blank">OhLife</a> is a new way of keeping a journal, and according to the <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/08/17/ohlife-personal-journal-email/" target="_blank">TechCrunch article on OhLife</a> it&#8217;s something we just might use.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m signing up today. Why? Well two parts. I would like to find out if the service is any good. That is the first reason. The second reason is I have long been inspired by <a href="http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/30-days/">Matt Cutt&#8217;s 30 Day Challenges</a>.</p>
<p>This is my first 30 day challenge. We&#8217;ll see how it goes. After 30 days of using the service I am confident I will be able to write a nice little post telling you what I thought of the service. Check back on the September 17 to see if I passed my challenge and what I thought of OhLife.</p>

<p>Jag har funderat mången gång på hur jag skulle gestalta den här bloggen. Jag vill skriva lite om allt möjligt. Sökmotoroptimering, onlinemarknadsföring, wakeboard och allt annat som jag håller på med ska kunna ha en plats här.</p>
<p>Det som gör det hela lite jobbigt är att jag har tre språk som jag vill skriva på. Visst, jag skulle ha kunnat lagt upp tre separata wp-install på servern och kört tre sidor, men jag orkar inte. Jag nöjer mig med att hålla mig till en sida och så får det vara bra. Hur jag har tänkt att lösa det hela blir ett senare problem.</p>
<p>Jag kommer ha en sida för svenska, en för tyska och köra bloggen i sin helhet för engelska. Det kommer vara, tja, sådär kul att försöka tänka ut hur jag ska pilla ihop alla sidor, posts och allt annat, men det är det som är utmaningen. Hur kul hade det varit att bara trycka ut en standard blogg i tre varianter. Nej, jag vill koda och trixa lite med sidan, så får jag se hur det blir.</p>
<p>En sak är dock säker. Den här sidan kommer aldrig att bli helt optimerad eftersom jag redan från början väljer att implementera en struktur som jag vet kunde ha varit bättre. Dock är det generellt inga problem. Sidan är förmodligen bättre optimerad än 95% av alla andra sidor bara genom att jag har valt en vettig plattform och att jag har relativt bra koll på vad jag håller på med.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I have been working online for over two years now. I have worked on several sites and I have had many of my own personal little blogs. My own personal little blogs have been spectacularly unsuccessful. Mostly because I had nothing invested in them &#8211; and I really didn&#8217;t care about them. At all. Zero.</p>
<p><strong>What makes this blog different?</strong><br />
Well &#8211; I&#8217;m invested.</p>
<p><strong>How am I invested?</strong><br />
Well &#8211; I put the most valuable thing I have into this. My name.</p>
<p><strong>Are you on meth?<br/>The most valuable thing you have is your name?</strong><br />
Well &#8211; Yes. I mean, NO! No, I am not on meth and yes, the most valuable thing I have is my name. I have nothing more in this world than my name. Sure, I have some money in the bank (and by some, I mean virtually none at all), a T-Shirt I really like and my wakeboard, but that is about it.</p>
<p>Your name is all you have. Your name is your <strong>brand</strong>! You can either take care of it, ignore it or drag it through the mud. I prefer to take care of my name. For those of you who are still reading &#8211; who knows your name? Your family for one, your employer (or teacher if you&#8217;re still at that stage in your life) your friends&#8230; but they all know you. Suppose someone who doesn&#8217;t know you gets your name. Maybe it was the nice girl you met last night. Maybe it was that guy you met who owns a business and is looking to hire someone who was in the right place at the right time. In today&#8217;s world people who want to know about you and who you are will use a little thing called a Search Engine. To your average Joe Bloggs (I should write a post about why that is funny) a Search Engine (SE) is Google, the Internet, Interwebs or MSN depending on their affinity with computers and IT.</p>
<p>This blog, literally, has my name on it. It already ranks page 1 on most search engines in most countries for my name. This is how I want my future friends and peers to view me if the search for me. I would like to avoid someone searching for my name and finding someone saying bad things. So far, that hasn&#8217;t happened, but it might. I cannot stop people from writing bad things about me. I cannot stop search engines finding and indexing that stuff, no matter how slanderous it is.</p>
<p>What I can do is to build a great site, surround myself with great content and hope that my friends link to me and say nice things. That way I&#8217;ll always be number one when searching for my own name.</p>
